PARIS, Sept 15 (AFP) - The French government has named Pierre Gadonneix as head of Electricite de France and appointed Jean-Francois Cirelli to replace him at Gaz de France, Industry Minister Patrick Devedjian said Wednesday.

Gadonneix was appointed to EDF's board last week, paving the way for his nomination as chief executive officer.

French government spokesman Jean-Francois Cope had already said that Gadonneix, 61, would be named as EDF's CEO at the ministerial meeting Wednesday, replacing Francois Roussely, whose term expired on July 11.

Cirelli, the deputy head of Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin's team of advisers, was considered the front-runner to replace Gadonneix at GDF, and was named to the gas company's board on Friday.

A graduate of the elite national school of administration, Cirelli, 46, handled economic issues as advisor to President Jacques Chirac before joining Raffarin's cabinet in 2002.
