PARIS, Sept 12, 2006 (AFP) - Gaz de France, at the centre of a privatisation row, reported on Tuesday that net profit in the first half had surged by 44 percent to a record of EUR 1.7 billion.

The group also raised its medium-term forecasts.

The previous record for six-months profit was in the first half of 2005 when the net result was EUR 1.185 billion.

The company said that it was now targeting net profit for the whole of this year of more than EUR 2.2 billion, from EUR 2 billion forecast previously.

The results were published on the day that trades unions were to demonstrate against a highly controversial bill in parliament to permit the privatisation of GDF so that it can be absorbed by private French energy group Suez.
