G8 leaders on Friday condemned the upsurge of violence in Sudan's contested Abyei border region and called for a withdrawal of all "unauthorised forces" from the region after a two-day summit.

"We condemn the recent escalation of violence in Abyei. We call on all parties to withdraw all unauthorised forces from the area, to uphold their previous commitments," said a joint G8/Africa declaration.

The declaration at the end of the summit in Deauville, northern France, also called on the parties "to reach agreements on all outstanding issues of the CPA, particularly the status of Abyei, oil issues and debt."

More than 150,000 people have fled fighting after northern Sudanese troops overran the fertile border region last week, threatening a north-south peace agreement.
