France's President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in the Riviera resort of Cannes on Wednesday to host the G20 Summit of the world's most powerful economies.

Sarkozy flew in one day before the formal opening of the summit for crisis talks with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel on eurozone debt and to host a dinner with China's President Hu Jintao.

After the dinner, Sarkozy and Merkel were to tackle Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou over his plan to put the European Union's latest bailout plan for his country to a referendum.

The French leader arrived at the Palais de Festivals, better known as the venue of Canne's renowned annual red carpet cinema festival, with France's Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.

On Thursday, the leaders of the G20 bloc of the world's biggest developed and emerging economic powers were to start two days of talks, protected by 12,000 police and special forces.
