The manhunt for the French policeman who killed his wife and two young children ended after he attempted suicide by firing two bullets in his stomach.

TOULOUSE – A fugitive policeman suspected of shooting dead his wife and two young children in a French village was arrested with serious wounds after attempting suicide, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Thierry Gourjault, 42, fired two bullets into his stomach, the prosecutor for Tarbes in south-western France, Gerard Aldige, told a press conference, adding that the officer had been flown to a hospital in Tolouse in a critical condition.

Gourjault's wife, their four-year-old son and his 10-year-old daughter from a first marriage were found dead at their home early Tuesday.

After a manhunt mobilising some 50 officers, dogs and a helicopter, police said he was arrested some 20 kilometers away (12 miles).

He was located through mobile telephone call satellite tracking.

When officers approached him, Gourjault fired several bullets in the direction of police, Aldige stated.

The prosecutor said police did not unload their firearms.

According to the deputy mayor of Cabanac Henri Desconet, Gourjault was thought to have shot his family at home on Monday night, leaving a note saying he planned to take his own life.
