PARIS, Jan 29 (AFP) - Overnight snowfall over much of France brought road traffic restrictions in the Paris region, but similar measures in other parts of the country were being lifted early Thursday, officials said.

The national road information centre said vehicles over 7.5 tonnes had been banned from roads in the Greater Paris (Ile de France) region, but regional officials said similar measures in the east and north, notably along the north-south Rhone river valley, were being lifted.

Although road traffic was said to be reasonably fluid in the Paris region early on Thursday, school bus services were cancelled in a number of French regions.

Services at the main Paris airports were reported to be near normal, after delays caused on Wednesday at Charles de Gaulle Airport by a combination of snow and fog.

However the Paris airports authority advised air travellers to check whether their flights were delayed before leaving home.

With the exception of the Mediterranean coast, most of the country was blanketed in snow overnight.
