ROME, Jan 13 (AFP) - A Frenchman was killed and an Italian policeman injured in a shootout at Italy's Ventimiglia border town, the Ansa news agency reported.

Bruno Kolli, 37, from the southern French district of Provence, had just crossed into Liguria on the Italian side of the border when he was asked by police to show his papers, the report said.

He did so but then opened the boot of his car and took out a .22 calibre rifle and fired on the police officers, wounding 35-year-old Corrado Aruta in the leg.

The head of the Italian police patrol returned fire killing the Frenchman on the spot, according to the Italian press agency.

Witnesses said Kolli appeared to be intoxicated.

A public prosecutor, the local police chief and other officials arrived later at the scene to investigate the incident.
