A Frenchman sentenced in Burundi to 25 years in jail for rape since April has been evacuated to France on medical grounds, sources said Tuesday.

"Patrice Faye was evacuated to France on health grounds last night," a member of a group campaigning for his freedom, adding that Faye had left the Burundian capital overnight.

Elie Ntungwanayo, a spokesman for Burundi's supreme court, confirmed the report.

"It's the prosecutor general who decided to allow Patrice Faye to leave Burundi for medical treatment," Ntungwanayo told AFP, adding the authorisation had been granted on Monday morning.

Asked what would happen about the rest of Faye's appeals hearing, Ntungwanayo said he did not have "enough elements to answer that question today."
