MADRID, Dec 6 (AFP) - A Frenchman of Algerian descent was the target of a shooting that killed two in the plush Spanish resort of Marbella, the Spanish press reported Monday.

An Italian hairdresser and a seven-year-old child were killed when masked gunmen sprayed bullets inside a shopping center on Saturday, while their intended target got away, the Spanish daily El Mundo said.

Referring to the Frenchman by the initials A.B., the newspaper said police suspect he was the target of a settling of scores over a debt from a hashish trafficking deal.

A.B. was identified by his bodyguard, who lay gravely wounded outside the shopping center. More than 50 spent cartridge cases were found inside.

According to daily El Pais, Spanish police are now looking for A.B., who manages several legal commercial ventures in Paris.

The shooting shocked the swank resort town in Spain's popular Costa del Sol, where a three-day mourning period has been declared.

While Marbella is a hot spot for celebrities, Spanish aristocrats and Saudi princes, the town has also become a favourite hangout for criminal gangs from North Africa, the south of France, Britain, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

In 2003 local police broke up 53 criminal groups involved in money-laundering and drugs, arms and vehicle trafficking.
