Lyon - A 20-year-old temporary worker died on Saturday after falling into an industrial meat grinding machine at a packaging plant in southeastern France, police and firefighters said.

"This was a terrible tragedy," said public prosecutor Jean-Pierre Nahon, adding that an inquiry had been ordered.

Sources close to the inquiry said the young worker fell into the machine from a height of about two metres (6.6 feet). The machine caused injuries to his head and left arm.

The investigation was due to focus on the condition of the machine, which should have stopped automatically once the worker fell in.

The company, Tendriade, which mainly packages veal, employs about 25 people. The accident took place at the company's premises at Saulce-sur-Rhone near the town of Valence.

No-one from the company was immediately available for comment.
