PARIS - The number of registered jobseekers in France fell by 1.2 percent in October to 1.9 million, official figures showed on Thursday.
The headline jobless figure counts unemployed people registered with the employment agency ANPE who are actively seeking full-time work.
The figure for October was 23,000 less than in September and 208,600 less than in October last year, the French economy and employment ministry said.
In September, France's statistics institute said it would stop publishing a monthly unemployment rate based on International Labour Organisation criteria and would instead issue raw numbers of jobless workers.
The unemployment rate, a common gauge of unemployment allowing comparison between countries, is now published only four times a year. The rate shows the number of unemployed people as a proportion of the total workforce.
In the second quarter, the last period for which data is available, the jobless rate fell to 8.1 percent of the workforce from 9.0 percent in the same period last year, the INSEE statistics agency said.
