French travel agents have decided to stop all flights to Mexico after the deadly epidemic 'swine flu' passed 150 in the death toll.

PARIS – France strongly advised its nationals not to travel to Mexico because of the deadly flu epidemic that began there, in a statement published on the foreign ministry website Tuesday.

"Because of the flu epidemic, travel to Mexico is strongly discouraged except for essential reasons," the ministry said, following the lead of near neighbour Britain, which made a similar statement earlier in the day.

Two French associations representing tour companies and travel agents said in a joint statement they had decided to halt all departures for Mexico, "in agreement with all retailers and main travel agents offering trips to Mexico."

French officials are waiting for news of test results on a suspected case of swine fever in a woman who recently returned from Mexico, and several other travellers have tested negative for the illness.

More than 150 people have died in Mexico since the outbreak of the disease, which experts fear could become a global pandemic.
