PARIS, May 12 (AFP) - The French trade deficit widened in March to EUR 2.379 billion (USD 3.024 billion) from EUR 1.7 billion in February, largely due to the rising cost of energy imports, the French customs office said Thursday.

The February trade deficit originally had been reported at EUR 1.517 billion.

The provisional, seasonally adjusted data for March showed exports totalled EUR 28.522 billion compared with EUR 29.135 billion the month before, revised from EUR 29.537 billion.

Imports were EUR 30.901 billion compared with EUR 30.835 billion in February, revised from EUR 31.054 billion reported originally.

For the first three months of the year, the trade balance showed a deficit of EUR 5.389 billion, compared with a surplus of EUR 597 million over the same period last year.

In March, the energy balance gave a deficit of EUR 3.581 billion compared with a deficit of EUR 2.758 billion a month ago, while the industrial balance showed a deficit of EUR 339 million, down from a EUR 530 million deficit last time.

"Already very high, the energy bill grew in March by EUR 800 million in a context of tension on the hydrocarbons market," the customs office said, noting that a contraction in industrial trade, after more than a year of increases, was "the month's other notable evolution".

Food products showed a surplus of EUR 631 million against a EUR 646 million surplus in February.

Airbus aircraft exports totalled 19 and were valued at EUR 1.029 billion versus 17 in February for EUR 1.153 billion.

Trade with Germany, the 12-state eurozone's biggest economy, showed a deficit of EUR 1.397 billion compared with a negative EUR 1.295 billion the month before.

The trade balance with the rest of the eurozone was a deficit of EUR 1.63 billion compared with a EUR 1.354 billion deficit in February.

Trade with Japan in March was a negative EUR 415 million against a deficit of EUR 416 million in February, while the US gave a surplus of EUR 159 million versus a surplus of EUR 297 million.
