BOBIGNY, France, June 11, 2006 (AFP) - A 17-month-old girl has died after being bitten about the head by an American Staffordshire terrier, becoming the second French child to be killed in a dog attack in less than two weeks, police said Sunday.

The girl, who has not been named, was accompanied by her parents and in a push-chair when she was set upon on Friday evening in the apartment belonging to her uncle in the Paris suburb of Sevran.

The dog has been put down and the uncle taken into custody, police said.

On May 31 an eight year-old boy died after being bitten in the neck by a Bull Mastiff in the Normandy town of Cauville-sur-Mer, and on June 3 another eight year-old boy lost an eye after being bitten by a Rottweiler in the Paris suburb of le Bourget.

On Saturday an 89 year-old woman was hospitalised after being bitten on the face and arm by an American Staffordshire terrier in the southwestern town of Saint-Vincent de Tyrosse.

Last week Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy promised new legislation to control dangerous dogs, of which he said there are 80,000 in France including 9,000 so-called attack dogs.

"If one day we could even ban them completely that would be ideal," he said. "These dogs are veritable weapons."
