LONDON, Nov 25 (AFP) - A man arrested in connection with the murder of a French student in London has been charged separately with raping three women, police said on Thursday.

Levi Bellfield, 36, who had been arrested on Monday on suspicion of murdering 22-year-old Amelie Delagrange in August, was subsequently bailed until January 2005 pending further inquiries in the case, officers said.

However, London's Metropolitan Police said later that Bellfield had been formally charged with three rapes in west London and Surrey, south of the city, which had previously not been reported.

According to sources close to the investigation, these alleged attacks are not linked to the Delagrange case.

Delagrange was battered to death on Twickenham Green, southwest London, as she walked home late on August 19.

Detectives have previously linked the murder to five other attacks in southwest London, including the killing of 19-year-old gap year student Marsha McDonnell.

Bellfield was the fifth man to have been arrested in connection with the French student's murder.

Two of the four previously detained were released on bail until December while the other two were also bailed, but have been detained under the Mental Health Act for a period of assessment.
