TULLE, France, Aug 24 (AFP) - A French motorist being chased by police -- who shot at him -- raced through two red lights, sped up four one-way streets the wrong way, smashed into a car, seriously injuring its 19-year-old driver, then escaped by diving into a river and swimming away.

Police in Tulle, in southwest France, waited till he got home, and arrested him there.

The 33-year-old, whose blood-alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit, told a court he was "a worker, not a criminal", but that he had panicked.

Police said they had chased him at high speed over 30km (20 miles) between the towns of Brive and Tulle, opening fire when he smashed his way through a road check.

He was sentenced to two years in prison, with 18 months suspended, fined EUR 740 and had his driving licence suspended for two years.
