A French soldier was killed Wednesday in a skirmish with rebels in Afghanistan, bringing to 59 the number of troops from France killed since Paris deployed forces there in 2001, officials said.

The paratrooper was killed in an encounter with rebels during a reconnaissance mission in the Alasay valley in the east of the country, the French presidency said in a statement.

Around 4,000 French soldiers are deployed to Afghanistan as part of a NATO international force, mainly in the district of Surobi and Kapisa province in the east of the country.
