French soldier killed in Afghanistan: officials
A French soldier was killed during an operation in Afghanistan on Saturday, the French president's office said, bringing to 53 the number of French troops killed there since 2001.
The soldier was caught in an explosion near his armoured vehicle in the eastern Tagab region, a statement said.
France has around 3,750 soldiers in Afghanistan fighting Islamist insurgents and training Afghan forces as part of the US-led NATO coalition, and two French journalists have been held hostage there for more than a year.
