COLMAR, France, March 9 (AFP) - Teachers at a school in the eastern French town of Thann staged a one-day strike Tuesday to protest against a decision allowing a Muslim girl to attend classes with her head covered.

The 11 year-old pupil was expelled from a nearby school in November but admitted to the Remy-Faesch college after exchanging her Islamic headscarf for a bandana that conceals her hair and ears.

Teachers say her headgear flouts the school's code of conduct, which outlaws "ostentatious" displays of religious affiliation.

The French parliament has just passed a law to come into effect in September which will prohibit "conspicuous" religious symbols in the classroom, including Islamic headscarves, Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses.

Education Minister Luc Ferry has said bandanas could also be banned if worn with the wrong intent.
