French sailor dead in Cyprus was navy, not UNIFIL

A French sailor found dead in the Cypriot resort of Limassol was not a member of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon as earlier reported, but served on a warship making a stopover, officials said Sunday.

The defence ministry in Paris said the dead man, whom Cypriot police said had fallen from a third-floor balcony after a heavy drinking session with colleagues, was part of a ship's crew taking a break on the island.

Police had earlier described him as a member of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon, which includes a large French contingent, but defence officials in both Paris and Lebanon said that this was not the case.
