DIJON - Eric Clapton has had his driving licence confiscated after he was caught by gendarmes speeding on a French motorway at 216 kilometres per hour (135 mph), a spokesman for the gendarmerie base in Dijon revealed Thursday.

The 59 year-old British rock and blues superstar was at the wheel of a Porsche 911 turbo sports car on Tuesday afternoon as it sped passed a roadside radar on the north-south A6 motorway in east central France at Merceuil, near the town of Beaune, in Burgundy, the spokesman said.

Clapton, who’s latest album contains a track called Hell Hound on My Trail, was also handed a EUR 750 (USD 925) on-the-spot fine before being allowed to continue his journey – with his secretary as chauffeur.

The gendarmerie spokesman added that Clapton humbly agreed to be shot by the 'sheriffs' - allowing himself to be photographed with the two gendarmerie motorcyclists who intercepted him.
