French rapper apologises for violent lyrics
In Sale Pute, French rapper OrelSan sings about breaking his unfaithful girlfriend’s arms and legs, and wanting her to die a slow death.
PARIS – A French rapper who threatens to beat up his unfaithful girlfriend in a song titled Sale Pute (Slut) apologised on Friday after it touched off protests from the government and rights groups.
OrelSan said he was sorry that the lyrics "may have offended some people" and asserted that he never considered himself "an aggressor of women", in a statement released by his record label Wagram.
The YouTube and Dailymotion video-sharing websites decided to restrict access to viewers over 18 to the music video for Sale Pute after Culture Minister Christine Albanel said she was "shocked" by the lyrics.
"I hate you, I want you to die a slow death," sings OrelSan, whose trademark is trashy lyrics.
"I want you to become pregnant and lose the baby. We'll see how you manage when your legs are broken, sweetie."
Albanel on Thursday assailed the song's lyrics as "praising brutality" and being "extraordinarily cruel" toward women.
The record label said OrelSan had dropped the song from his repertoire several months ago and that it was never meant to incite violence against women.
Albanel and the junior minister responsible for women's issues, Valerie Letard, had asked YouTube and Dailymotion to take the music video off their sites completely.
But the two websites decided instead to limit access after receiving complaints.
"The content of this video does not seem to us to be explicitly illegal," said a YouTube spokesman.
The rights group Ni Putes Ni Soumises (Neither Whores nor Submissive), which is active in the high-immigrant suburbs, had called on OrelSan to apologise and said he should not be allowed to perform at a music festival in April.
The group urged OrelSan's record label, Wagram, "to take action so that this song will never again be performed in concert or at any event".
The music video shows OrelSan holding an empty bottle of whisky as he raps: "You're just a slut, slut, slut... If I break your arm, consider that we parted on good terms."
