INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, May 17, 2007 (AFP) - Frenchman Stephan Gregoire was hospitalized with a fractured vertebrae after crashing here Thursday during a practice session for weekend qualifying for the 91st Indianapolis 500.

Gregoire had the fastest lap of the day around 2 1/2-mile (4km) oval for drivers not already qualified for the May 27 race at 217.851 mph (348.561 k/hr) but the subsequent crash dimmed his hopes of making the 33-car field.

Gregoire crashed into the outside wall in turn one and complained of back pain. He was taken to Methodist Hospital and diagnosed with an endplate fracture of the third thoracic vertebrae.

Doctors will hold Gregoire overnight but he is expected to be released Friday. Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials will evaluate his fitness to drive once he returns to the track.

Gregoire, 38, is trying to qualify for his eighth Indy start. His best showing in the race was eighth place in 2000.
