French private sector activity slows in June: study

French private sector activity slowed slightly in June compared with May but remained robust thanks to the services industry, an index published by the financial information group Markit showed on Monday.

The index came to 59.6 points in June after having reached 60.1 in May. A reading over 50 signals an expansion in activity. A reading lower than 50 points to a contraction.

The services sector index came to 60.8 in June after 61.4 in May.

"The pace of French activity remained brisk in June, with the second quarter ending on a vigorous note," said Markit economist Jack Kennedy.

"A sharp rise in employment in the services sector, the strongest since April 2008, helped the labour market and consequently consumption."
