PARIS, Jan 17, 2006 (AFP) -  The population of France including its overseas territories stood at 62.9 million at the start of this year, 367,600 more than the year before, according to an official census published Tuesday.

Most of the population growth was caused by a strong birth rate, and a quarter by immigration, the census for the National Statistics Office (INSEE) reported.

France had a fertility rate of 1.94 per woman in 2005, one of the highest in Europe, and produced 807,400 babies.

Life expectancy in France remained stable at 76.7 years for men and 83.8 for women. French women have, with Spanish women, the longest life expectancy in the EU, INSEE said.
