French politician's brother in court on drug charges
The brother of former French justice minister Rachida Dati was hauled before a Belgian court Tuesday to answer charges of importing drugs and was kept in detention, judicial sources said.
Jamal Dati, 38, was arrested last week after he was caught driving across the border from Maastricht in The Netherlands with 30 grammes of heroin and five grammes of marijuana.
A criminal court in the eastern Belgian city of Liege granted him conditional release until a trial date is set. But he was kept in custody after prosecutors appealed the decision.
He will be kept in jail until a new hearing within 15 days.
His lawyers denied that Dati is a dealer and the drugs were for personal use. He was given a one-year sentence in France in August 2007 for drug dealing.
