PARIS, Jan 8, 2007 (AFP) - A Socialist politician in charge of the council governing the greater Paris region went on trial Monday for corruption.

Jean-Paul Huchon, 60, went before a Paris court on charges of overseeing public tenders for public relations campaigns in 2002 and 2003 that enriched his wife, Dominique Le Texier-Huchon, and for hiring her to his office in 2004.

Le Texier-Huchon, a former council official in charge of tenders, Dominique Merchez, and a businessman, Michel Sajn, were also on trial. The case was expected to run for a week.

Huchon has denied any wrongdoing.
