French politician Rachida Dati's brother detained for drugs
Jamal Dati, brother of former French justice minister Rachida Dati, was arrested by Belgian police after being caught at the border carrying drugs, judicial sources said Thursday.
Dati was arrested on Wednesday afternoon when driving across the border from Maastricht in The Netherlands with 30 grammes of heroin and five grammes of marijuana.
The 38-year-old, who was placed behind bars in Liege, is facing charges of "importing drugs". He was previously given a one-year sentence in France in August 2007 for drug dealing.
"I have never hidden having a drug-addicted brother", Rachida Dati said during an online political programme.
"The only thing that my brother and I regret, is that when it is my brother or my family, there is a story there and a big buzz, while when children of personalities or ministers have done serious things and been convicted, we rarely speak of them, if at all," she said.
Last year Jamal Dati published a book of memoirs titled "In Rachida's Shadow" delving into his fraught relations with his sister who no longer spoke to him face to face, he said.
Another of her brothers, Omar Dati, was also sentenced in 2007 to eight years behind bars for drugs trafficking, his second sentence for dealing in drugs.
Dati was dropped from the French government last year and is now a European lawmaker and mayor of Paris's posh seventh arrondissement.
