French police told to do all to take Merah alive: prosecutor
French police were told to do everything to take self-proclaimed Al-Qaeda killer Mohamed Merah alive when they raided his flat, top prosecutor Francois Molins said Thursday.
But Merah opened fire on police with a Colt .45 handgun during the raid and was killed with a bullet to the head, Molins said, with RAID special forces police only authorised to open fire in self-defence.
"It is precisely because all this was done that the operation lasted so long, at RAID's peril, with five of them wounded," he said, adding that the wounds were light, except for one to a policeman's foot.
