Paris - A first contingent of French police officers will head to Afghanistan on Monday on a mission to train and protect the war-torn country's police, the police said Saturday.

Fifty-seven police officers are due to fly to Afghanistan on Monday, setting off from a Paris airport.

Most of the officers are from a force in Chauny, northern France, and will work in Nijrab and Tagab to the northeast of Kabul.

A total of 150 French police officers will be deployed in the country by December 1. They will be involved in the training of the Afghan police and escorting police patrols.
