PARIS, March 17 (AFP) - British model Heather Stewart-Whyte, the former wife of French tennis star Yannick Noah, is "alive and in good health", French police said Wednesday after opening an inquiry into her possible kidnapping.

Police in Britain were alerted to the disappearance of Stewart-Whyte, who lives in France, when her mother and sister said they had received phone calls from an English-speaking woman asking for a ransom of several million dollars.

The family said they had not heard from the 34-year-old model in 10 days, which they qualified as highly unusual.

British police informed their French counterparts, who launched an investigation, police in Paris said.

But French police later said, without further explanation, that Stewart-Whyte was "certainly not kidnapped" and was to be questioned by investigators late Wednesday to explain her disappearance.

"She is alive and in good health" and in France, investigators said.Noah, the 1983 French Open champion, married Stewart-Whyte in 1995. The couple is now divorced. They have two children, who live with the 43-year-old former tennis pro turned singer.
