CAEN, Aug 12 (AFP) - French police Friday arrested four Indians hidden in a truck trying to sneak into Britain illegally, officers said.

The four, aged 18 to 27, were found in the back of the vehicle as its cargo was unloaded in Mondeville, a town near Caen, close to the English Channel. They had apparently climbed on board at a motorway truck-stop.

The Indians said they had paid 900,000 rupees (EUR 16,640) to fly from India to Italy, and from there to travel to Belgium by truck. They said they then paid another EUR 400 to be driven by car to the truck-stop in France.

They were being detained pending their removal from France.

Police said they rarely arrest Indian illegal immigrants, adding that more commonly they picked up Romanians, Georgians and Moldavans.
