A 78-year-old Frenchman shot dead two town council employees and a bystander before turning his rifle on himself and attempting to commit suicide Thursday, the local prosecutor said.

The pensioner opened fire in the street in Rivesaltes, a winegrowing village in the Western Pyrenees region of southwest France, said Jean-Pierre Dreno, the chief public prosecutor in the nearby city of Perpignan.
