MOSCOW, July 20 (AFP) - A French man working in the oil industry was found murdered Wednesday on Russia's far eastern island of Sakhalin, the prosecutor's office said.

MOSCOW, July 20 (AFP) - A French man working in the oil industry was found murdered Wednesday on Russia's far eastern island of Sakhalin, the prosecutor's office said.

The body of the man, bearing six knife wounds, was found at his home in Sakhalin's main town of Yuzhno Sakhalinsk, prosecutor Tatyana Kutuzova was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

The French embassy in Moscow confirmed that a French national had been killed in Yuzhno Sakhalinsk, but gave no further details.

The man, who was born in 1956, was a manager at the Starstroi company, which is working on the Sakhalin II gas project led by Royal Dutch/Shell, Kutuzova said.

Prosecutors have opened an inquiry for premeditated murder, she added.
