French official industrial production rises 2% in May

Industrial production in France expanded by 2.0 percent in May from activity in April, the national statistics institute INSEE said on Monday.

Ouput by the manufacturing sector, excluding mining and construction, increased by 1.5 percent in May after staying flat in April, INSEE said.

For the months of March, April and May, manufacturing production increased 0.9 percent compared to the preceding three months, while production overall stayed flat with a small rise of 0.1 percent.

Transport equipment production was down 1.9 percent during the three-month period, with a 4.6-percent slide in automobile production.

Compared with activity in the same period last year, total production over the three months rose 4.8 percent, with only petro-chemical production falling year-on-year, INSEE said.

In May, nearly all sectors saw production growth compared to April.

Production in electrical equipment, electronics, computing and other equipment rose 2.3 percent.

Transport production, including automobiles, increased 2.5 percent and other industrial production, including textiles and metals, rose 1.4 percent.

Only agriculture and food production fell in May with a drop of 0.2 percent.
