French officer killed in Afghanistan: officials
A French officer was killed in Afghanistan on Friday during a gunfight with insurgents, bringing France's toll to 51 since the conflict began in 2001, the French presidency said.
The officer died when the unit he was leading exchanged fire with insurgents during a reconnaissance mission in the Alasay valley northeast of Kabul, the presidency said in a statement.
"This soldier has paid with his life for France's commitment, alongside its allies, to the service of peace and security of the Afghan people," President Nicolas Sarkozy said in the statement.
There are about 3,750 French troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
