French nuclear group Areva says two staff kidnapped in Niger
The French nuclear group Areva confirmed Thursday that two of its employees had been kidnapped in Niger, following a report that seven people -- five of them French -- had been abducted.
"We regret to announce the kidnap, during the night of Wednesday to Thursday, of two of our employees working at the mine in Arlit," a spokesman said, referring to a uranium mine in the north of the West African country.
The spokesman did not identify the hostages, nor give their nationalities.
Le Monde newspaper had earlier reported that seven people working for two French firms had been kidnapped, including five Frenchmen.
