VILNIUS, Aug 11 (AFP) - French rock singer Bertrand Cantat, jailed in Lithuania for beating to death his actress girlfriend Marie Trintignant, staged a concert Wednesday for his fellow inmates at the Lukiskiu prison complex, his lawyer said.

"The concert lasted for an hour and the hall was full," Virginijus Papirtis told AFP.

The 40-year-old lead singer of the group Noir Desir played guitar and harmonica as he performed 20 songs in English and French in a church on the prison grounds.   His lawyer said Cantat decided to give the concert after recovering his guitar from Lithuanian prosecutors.

"His fingers were bloody when he tried it for the first time after so long," Papirtis said.   His brother Xavier was present at Wednesday's concert.

A Lithuanian court sentenced Cantat in March to eight years in prison, though he filed a petition in July asking to serve out his time in France.

Lithuanian officials have said that the necessary legal steps in handing Cantat over to France could take two to four months.

Cantat was found guilty of causing the death of Trintignant, 41, during a fight in their Vilnius hotel room last July. She died nearly a week later on August 1 of swelling to the brain.

Trintignant, the daughter of veteran French film star Jean-Louis Trintignant, had been in Vilnius to shoot a television movie about the French writer Colette, directed by her mother Nadine.
