BEIJING, May 23, 2006 (AFP) - Three mountaineers, from France, Russia and Brazil, have died in recent days while climbing Mount Everest, Chinese state media said Tuesday.

The French and Brazilian climbers died Friday of exhaustion and lack of oxygen, while the Russian succumbed to exhaustion Monday, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Details about the deaths were sketchy, as the expeditions the three participated in had no communications equipment to keep in touch with base camps, it said.

Since the 1920s, nearly 200 people have died trying to climb Everest, which many Tibetans and Nepalis consider a holy mountain.
