LYON – The mother of two newborn infants whose decomposing bodies were found in a basement in central France this week has been charged with their murder, officials said Wednesday.

The 38-year-old, arrested on Tuesday, has admitted abandoning the children, a girl and a boy, at birth, but not to killing them, a judicial official said.

The infants' bodies were discovered Monday in the basement of the woman's former apartment block - one in an ice box, the other in a plastic bag - on a housing estate in Montlucon in central France.

The babies were born in 2003 and 2005, according to initial results of the investigation into their deaths.

Results of the post-mortem examination are expected in the coming days.

The woman is the mother of two other children. If convicted of murder she faces life imprisonment.
