ALBERTVILLE, France, Aug 23, 2007 (AFP) - French police on Thursday arrested the mother of three newborn babies after their decomposing bodies were found in a suitcase and a box at her home in the Alpine city of Albertville.

The 36-year-old woman told police she had given birth to the babies on her own and hidden them from her partner, according to police sources.

The babies born in 2001, 2003 and 2006 were kept in a freezer, stashed in plastic bags, but the woman moved the bodies out of fear that her partner could discover them.

Her companion stumbled on one of the decomposing bodies in a suitcase while the woman was away and alerted police.

Prosecutor Henry-Michel Perret said "we do not know if the woman voluntarily killed the newborn babies or whether she let them die."

"She said that she did not want to be pregnant and that since she did not gain weight during pregnancy, neither her family nor her companion noticed anything," he added.

Last year Frenchwoman Veronique Courjault, 38, confessed to killing three of her babies after two were found by her husband in their freezer in the South Korean capital Seoul.
