French mother arrested after baby's body found in freezer
French police said on Wednesday they had arrested a 35-year-old mother after her baby's body was discovered in her freezer.
The woman, who was arrested on Sunday in the southwestern town of Saint Laurent du Var, is facing charges of homicide of a minor and "concealing a corpse", police in the nearby city of Nice said.
The woman told police that she had hidden the body after she went into labour, not knowing that she was pregnant, and gave birth in her bathtub.
But police said there were doubts about that story as the body of the baby, whose gender was not released, measured at least 62 centimetres (24 inches), about the size of a two- or three-month-old child.
The results of an autopsy aimed at determining the cause of the baby's death will be released by the end of the week, a judicial source said.
The woman's teenage daughter discovered the frozen body on Saturday at the suspect's former home in Vichy. The woman had recently moved to Saint Laurent du Var to live with a new boyfriend but had kept her former home.
