French marine killed in Afghanistan: official
A French marine was killed in Afghanistan overnight, bringing France's toll to 52 since the conflict began in 2001, President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said Saturday.
The warrant officer was killed and a colleague wounded during an operation in the Bedraou valley in Kapisa province east of Kabul, a statement said, giving no details.
Sarkozy expressed France's determination to continue to work with international forces to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.
The incident came only hours after a French officer, Captain Benoit Dupin, died in a firefight between the unit he was leading and insurgents during a reconnaissance mission in the Alasay valley northeast of Kabul.
There are about 3,750 French troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
