A teacher of French nationality was shot dead in Ivory Coast's capital Yamoussoukro, officials in Paris told AFP on Friday, without indicating whether the death was linked to the political conflict.

"This teacher was killed during the night of Thursday to Friday in his hotel room," said one of the officials, who asked not to be named. "We do not know if this was linked to the fighting or if it was a criminal affair."

Another official in Paris said: "It is possible that it was a stray bullet like the one that killed a Swedish woman working for the UN in Abidjan," Ivory Coast's main city, which has been rocked by explosions and gunfire.

The Swedish woman, Zahra Abidi, was killed on Thursday, Swedish officials said.

Yamoussoukro fell on Wednesday to forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, who is recognised by much of the international community as the country's rightful leader, as they swept south to Abidjan aiming to drive Gbagbo from power.
