PARIS, June 16 (AFP) - Three major French brands banded together Wednesday at Paris's Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport to warn tourists visiting Italy not to bring back counterfeit goods.

"Italy is a veritable bastion of counterfeiting in Europe, which is also being invaded by fake goods from China," an official from the 70-company Colbert Committee which is overseeing the operation told AFP.

Customs officials and the JCDecaux billboard ad firm are also cooperating in the campaign, with the latter providing space for two weeks near departure and arrival gates for flights to Italy.

Staff from the Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Lacoste companies handed out brochures reminding travellers they risked fines of up to EUR 300,000 (USD 365,000) and jail terms of up to three years for illegally importing fake merchandise.

Three posters displayed imitations of the companies' products, with one showing a counterfeit Vuitton mobile telephone case with the slogan: "Your last call will be to your lawyer."

A second by Lacoste said "A fake crocodile could mean real tears", while one by Chanel said "Customs will make sure you are in the loop" using a French-language play on the word perfume.

French customs official Philippe Kearney told AFP that Italian counterparts would also participate in a coordinated crackdown on counterfeit goods.
