French lawmakers to vote on Greek aid package next week
French lawmakers will vote next week on France's contribution to a 45-billion-euro (60-billion-dollar) rescue package for debt-laden Greece, their speaker said Tuesday.
France is ready to provide 6.3 billion euros in loans including 3.3 billion euros to cover current accounts, said Bernard Accoyer, adding that the vote would take place on May 4.
The French loans are expected to be approved, as President Nicolas Sarkozy's right-wing UMP party holds a majority in the lower house National Assembly and his government has agreed to make a contribution.
The Greek government is hoping to secure the first loans from the aid package put together by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund before a May 19 deadline in order to pay bondholders some nine billion euros.
