LONDON, Aug 5 (AFP) - Shares in Aegis soared 10 percent in early London trade Friday following news that Groupe Bollore, which is controlled by French businessman Vincent Bollore, had acquired a six percent stake in the British media research group.

Groupe Bollore announced Thursday after the close of the London market that it had acquired 6.03 percent of Aegis.

The purchase of a 6.03 percent Aegis stake represents an investment of just over EUR 100 million, a Bollore spokesman said. He declined to say, however, if Bollore would continue to buy Aegis shares.

Aegis shares surged 10.3 percent to 126 pence, while the FTSE 100 index was up 0.29 percent.

The acquisition fanned speculation that Bollore intends to orchestrate a merger of Aegis with Havas, the French advertising company in which Bollore owns a 22 percent stake.

Bollore took over as Havas chairman on July 12.
