French inflation rate rises in August

PARIS, Sept 13, 2007 (AFP) - The French consumer price index for August showed a rise of 0.4 percent compared with a 0.2 percent monthly gain in July, figures from the INSEE statistics office showed Thursday.

PARIS, Sept 13, 2007 (AFP) - The French consumer price index for August showed a rise of 0.4 percent compared with a 0.2 percent monthly gain in July, figures from the INSEE statistics office showed Thursday.

Year-on-year CPI was up 1.2 percent in August against a 1.1 percent rise in July.

Economists polled by Thomson Financial news wire had expected a 0.3 percent rise month-on-month in August and said CPI was seen unchanged at a 1.1 percent rise over the year.

Underlying "core" inflation, which excludes products with either regulated or highly-volatile prices, rose 0.4 percent in August after being unchanged in July.

Over the year, the European Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices or HICPP rose 1.3 percent compared with the 1.2 percent expected by economists.
