PARIS, Jan 13 (AFP) - French consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in December from November and were up two percent from December 2003, the national statistics institute INSEE reported Thursday.

"The modest increase in the consumer price index in December masks contrasting - and sometimes pronounced - movements," INSEE said.

Prices of fresh food products, for example, increased three percent from November while those for certain services were up 0.3 percent.

By contrast, energy prices fell 1.2 percent in December compared with the previous month. For the year to December, energy prices advanced 10.2 percent, with oil prices alone gaining 16.4 percent.
