PARIS, July 13 (AFP) - French consumer prices were stable in June compared with May, but rose by 2.4 percent on an annual basis, provisional data released Tuesday by the national statistics institute Insee showed.

In May, retail prices had risen by 0.4 percent on the month and by 2.6 percent from the same month a year earlier.

When tobacco prices are stripped out, they rose by 0.1 percent and 2.0 percent respectively in June.

The stable one-month figure in June nonetheless hid contrasting trends, Insee said in a statement.

Energy prices fell, as did the cost of clothing and footwear during traditional summer sales.

Meanwhile, fresh food prices and the cost of services headed upwards.
